How to improve employee engagement
Being a manager comes with many responsibilities; ensuring your employees are engaged and motivated is just one of them, however it is arguably one of the most important. If your new employees feel underappreciated and undervalued, they will quickly lose interest and motivation for their job, potentially resulting in resignations. Take note of the following tips to understand how to maximise employee engagement…
Make a good first impression
Ensuring that your employees are excited about their position from their very first day is extremely important and will keep them on track in their role. They should be introduced to the business in a way which excites them and makes them want to excel to the best of their potential with the company. This can be achieved through a thorough onboarding process, enabling them to acquire necessary knowledge and skills in an intriguing way.
Communicate well and often
Being the new employee can be daunting, not knowing how things operate, and not completely sure of exactly what’s expected of you. This is why it’s extremely important that as a manager you communicate often with your new employees to provide support, feedback and inform them of what is required of them. At the end of the day, ensuring that your employees feel comfortable within their new position is crucial if you want them to stay with the business.
Ask about their goals
Understanding your employee’s professional goals and where they envision themselves in the future is vital if you want to be able to keep them motivated and maximise employee engagement. Once you have spoken to them about this, it is easier for you to set them goals within the company, maybe 30-, 60- or 90-day goals to give them something to work towards that will not only benefit the company but also themselves.
Introduce them to the team
Despite the fact that introductions can sometimes be awkward, introducing your new employee to the team will make them feel welcomed and familiar with all relevant colleagues. It is important that a new employee knows with the people they will be working directly with, the earlier they are introduced, the better! Why not organise a welcome lunch for your new starter to meet the team?
Show them around!
Give your new employee a full tour of the workplace when they arrive for their first day. Show them where all of the essentials are e.g. the bathroom, kitchen, first aid box, fire exits etc. If they know where everything is, they will be more independent from the get-go and this will help them to feel comfortable within their new role.
Give them a buddy
To help initiate your new starter, give them a buddy! This should be someone who doesn’t manage them or influence their workload. It is easier if this person is unrelated to their line of work as your employee should feel like they can confide in them and ask questions they may not feel comfortable asking their manager. This will also give them a sense of comfort as they will become familiar with somebody else in the business and give them someone to go to if need be.
If you follow these simple tips, your new employee should feel content and comfortable within their new role, and as a bonus, your company will reap increased employee loyalty and improved employee engagement.
You should be actively encouraging your leaders and managers to continually improve the way they engage with both new and old hires in the office. If you forget your existing employees, they may become somebody else’s new hire!
